Liverpool’s tilt at a historic quadruple is over after they suffered the pain of defeat in the closing seconds of extra time in a spectacular FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Jurgen Klopp’s side failed to capitalize on twice holding the lead, the second time when Harvey Elliott put them 3-2 ahead in extra time.
Amad Diallo’s goal gave United a 4-3 win and Liverpool were left to reflect on a missed opportunity, particularly in the second half when their usual urgency and clinical edge went missing as they led 2-1 and were dominating the game.
This still has the capacity to be a very special farewell season for manager Jurgen Klopp and his team, with the Carabao Cup won and Liverpool in pursuit of the Premier League and Europa League.
Liverpool will know, however, that they had it on their feet to win a game at Old Trafford that they ended up losing and this will hurt, especially as the beneficiaries were the old enemy Manchester United, who now went on to face Championship side Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.
